Outstanding Education

Powered by Philanthropy:
Charlotte’s First Medical School and Innovation District Open

Charlotte’s long-held vision to become a destination for medical education is now a reality through The Pearl, a state-of-the-art innovation district developed in partnership with Atrium Health, Wexford Science & Technology, LLC, and Ventas. Opened in June 2025, The Pearl positions Atrium Health at the forefront of discovery and research. Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte — the city’s first four-year medical school — anchors the campus, and IRCAD — a global leader in advanced surgical training — operates its exclusive North American headquarters there.

Health system leaders, donors, and community gathered to celebrate the milestone — made possible through visionary philanthropy — and to welcome the inaugural class of students to the Howard R. Levine Center for Education. Over the next five years, enrollment at Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte is anticipated to grow to 100 students annually.

Where History Informs Innovation

The Pearl stands in an area historically known as Brooklyn — a vibrant, self-sustaining Black community with diverse families, active businesses, schools, and a place of worship. During the 1960s and 1970s, Brooklyn was impacted by Charlotte's first wave of urban renewal, displacing thousands of neighborhood residents. Today, The Pearl honors its legacy through inclusive design, community partnerships and the Purposeful Walk — a living tribute to the voices and stories of Brooklyn's past.

A Look Inside the Howard R. Levine Center for Education

Donors have been integral to the creation of The Pearl, bringing future physicians, researchers, and health care innovators to the region. With many graduates choosing to practice where they train, this collective investment will expand access to care and improve health for generations to come.

The Howard R. Levine Center for Education, a key academic building within The Pearl, serves as the hub for Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte, Carolinas College of Health Sciences, and Wake Forest University's School of Professional Studies and School of Business. Made possible by the Howard R. Levine Foundation's vision and generosity, the center advances excellence in medical education and innovation.

Community Health

Leveraging Innovative Technologies to Advance Rural Health

Atrium Health's Community and School-Based Virtual Care

Through strong community partnerships and generous philanthropic support, Atrium Health is meeting patients where they live and learn by expanding virtual care across the Carolinas. Atrium Health Levine Children's School-Based Virtual Care, Atrium Health School-Based Therapy, and Atrium Health Community Virtual Primary Care connect pediatric and adult patients to trusted providers through secure video visits delivered directly in schools and community settings.

Using advanced technology, physicians and clinicians can diagnose and treat acute health conditions and mental health concerns remotely, with parents and family members able to participate either in-person or virtually. These care models provide timely, convenient access to care and ensure continuity of care, particularly in rural and high-need communities.

This work is made possible by the generosity of donors, with leading support from The Leon Levine Foundation, The Duke Endowment, the Bank of America Meaningful Medicine Program, the Lebda Family Rural Healthcare Program, CVS Health, Ernst & Young, and Epic Systems.

Atrium Health Stanly’s Virtual Nursing Program

As workforce shortages and rising patient acuity place increasing strain on rural care teams, Atrium Health is leveraging technology within hospital settings to strengthen care delivery. Atrium Health Stanly will soon launch its virtual nursing program, becoming the first fully wired virtual nursing facility in rural North Carolina.

Established with a transformational grant from The Duke Endowment, the program will utilize two-way cameras in patient rooms, enabling bedside nurses to focus on direct, hands-on care. In tandem, virtual nurses will assist with continuous clinical support, including admission assessments, medication education, discharge planning, and safety checks. The initiative is expected to create 50 new jobs in Stanly County while improving care quality and teammate satisfaction.

Supporting Maternal Health Through Prenatal Care

Atrium Health Women's Care is committed to expanding access to maternal health services, ensuring patients receive high-quality care regardless of background, financial resources, or location. Philanthropy has driven community-centered models that better support women throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Launched in 2018, CenteringPregnancy® is an evidence-based, group prenatal care model that integrates clinical care, education, and peer support. Since inception, the program has served more than 500 patients, improving access and outcomes while fostering meaningful connections among expectant mothers. A transformational grant from AmeriHealth Caritas, Inc. is accelerating program growth by expanding patient education, improving transportation access, strengthening facilitator training, and introducing new virtual care options to better serve diverse communities.

Strengthening Care Through Community Health Workers

Atrium Health continues to lead in addressing social determinants of health, which are non-medical factors such as housing, food security, and education that shape health outcomes. As a committed investor in the Housing Impact Fund, the health system has helped preserve over 1,800 affordable housing units while embedding wraparound services.

Community health workers are central to this model, connecting residents to resources in health care, food access, financial stability, education, and workforce development. Embedded across multiple communities, these trusted team members engage residents, coordinate referrals, host community events, and support initiatives such as vaccine clinics, back-to-school programs, and technology access.

Philanthropic leadership from The Leon Levine Foundation and Margaret and Smoky Bissell sustains these vital positions, strengthening connections and building healthier, more resilient communities.

Cancer Innovation

Advancing Blood Cancer Research

A national leader in blood cancer care, Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute continues to advance CAR T-cell therapy and deliver leading treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.

After experiencing the impact of this work firsthand, Blaire and Jonathan Bancroft made a transformational gift to accelerate translational research led by Dr. Nilanjan Ghosh. Their investment will support an international phase 3 clinical trial, along with two studies evaluating a novel antibody therapy and risk factors influencing chronic lymphocytic leukemia outcomes. To help ensure access to care, the Bancrofts' gift also provides travel and lodging assistance for patients with blood cancers.

Elevating Prostate Cancer Care

Established by Sandra Levine and the Levine-Sklut Family Foundation, The Sklut Family Procedure Suite will expand capacity for prostate and genitourinary procedures at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute, where rising demand and limited operating room availability had previously constrained timely care.

The new suite will support safe, comfortable on-site procedures, including focal therapy and transperineal biopsies under sedation. This investment improves diagnostic accuracy, reduces infection risk, shortens wait times, and expands capacity for cancer procedures requiring sedation.

Celebrating a Major Milestone in Proton Beam Therapy

In December 2025, 15-year-old Ava became the 100th patient to complete proton beam therapy at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Proton & Advanced Radiation Center — just 14 months after the therapy launched. Following chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant for Hodgkin lymphoma, Ava completed 20 highly targeted treatments, designed to reduce recurrence risk while minimizing long-term side effects.

Her journey reflects the power of advanced technology combined with compassionate, patient- centered care — and the impact of philanthropy led by The Leon Levine Foundation, which made this leading-edge treatment available to patients and families across the region.

Neurosciences & Behavioral Health Care

Supporting a National Model for Cognitive Health

Across Advocate Health, of which Atrium Health is a part, more than 600 physicians and advanced practice providers are advancing cognitive care — a proactive approach to brain health emphasizing early screening, comprehensive assessment, and treatment of memory loss, dementia, and other neurological disorders.

With leading support from the Shelton and Houser families, Heather and Tom Finke, SteelFab, Inc. and the Sherrill family, and Dennis Moser, Atrium Health is strengthening services regionally while helping define a national model for cognitive health. Philanthropy drives this innovation and collaboration, including strategic academic partnerships with Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which is renowned for its research in Alzheimer's disease and related conditions.

By supporting clinical expertise, research, and patient-centered care, these investments will enable scalable programs with impact across Advocate Health and beyond.

Expanding Brain Stimulation Therapies

Atrium Health Behavioral Health is advancing care for patients with treatment-resistant depression and other mood disorders through neuroimaging and brain stimulation. For more than a decade, patients have benefited from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive therapy that delivers magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain associated with mood regulation.

Thanks to the generosity of Lynn and Marshall Carlson, the Hendrick Family Foundation, and an anonymous donor, patients now also have access to Magnus Medical's Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT), an FDA-approved, advanced form of TMS that reduces treatment time from weeks to just five days, providing critical support for patients experiencing psychiatric crises.

Investing in Academic Leadership

Dr. Chris Ullrich and Mrs. Betsy Ullrich

A visionary estate commitment from the late Dr. Chris Ullrich and Mrs. Betsy Ullrich will strengthen academic excellence and discovery at Atrium Health for generations to come. Betsy and Chris lived in Charlotte where Chris worked at Charlotte Radiology for 38 years.

At the heart of their gift is the establishment of two endowed chair positions, including the Christopher G. and Betsy C. Ullrich Endowed Chair in Neurosciences. This chair will help accelerate research, expand educational opportunities, and attract leading physician-scientists to Atrium Health Neurosciences Institute. With flexible support to pursue promising new therapies, the position will drive breakthroughs that ease the burden of neurological disease for patients and families.

Heart Transformation

Scaling Cardiovascular Analytics

At Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, the Jenny & Jeff Gross Family Center for Cardiovascular Care Transformation drives system-wide cardiovascular innovation. Programs like Hypertension Bootcamp use team-based care, remote monitoring, and analytics to close care gaps — particularly in underserved communities — and improve outcomes.

A portion of a new transformational investment from the William, Jeff and Jennifer Gross Family Foundation will help expand this proven model across Advocate Health centers in the Midwest and Southeast by strengthening cardiovascular analytics infrastructure. Funding will support a dedicated team of data scientists, quality engineers, and clinical informatics specialists, while integrating advanced systems across regions to create a unified view of performance and equity. This work will help bring effective programs to more communities and accelerate the ability to address additional conditions.

Expanding Cardio-Oncology Care

The Dowd Foundation Center for Cardio-Oncology at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute is redefining care for patients navigating heart conditions from cancer treatment. In 2023, the program earned gold-level designation from the International Cardio-Oncology Society, placing it among the world's leading comprehensive cardio-oncology programs.

The program continues to grow rapidly, with nearly 700 new patient visits in 2025. Philanthropic support from The Dowd Foundation, Inc. has enabled a disease-specific cardiac rehabilitation program; innovations in advanced cardiac imaging and early detection of conditions such as amyloidosis; streamlined care coordination through dedicated cardiovascular nurse managers; and new clinical space, with expanded facilities opening in 2026.

Cardio-Oncology Care Lecture
More than 130 cardiologists, oncologists, and researchers attended the second annual Dowd Foundation Center for Cardio-Oncology Symposium in October 2025, sharing advances in immunotherapy, cardiac critical care, and amyloidosis.
Finding Strength Through Cardiac Rehabilitation

When Elyse began experiencing chest pressure, coordinated care at Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute led to a diagnosis of coronary artery disease and heart failure. Cardiac rehabilitation became a critical part of her recovery, and a donor-funded scholarship at Atrium Health Cabarrus removed financial barriers to participation.

Today, Elyse is rebuilding her strength and confidence — a powerful reminder of how philanthropy supports patients from diagnosis through recovery.

CHILDREN’S EXCELLENCE

Powering the ARISE Cancer Consortium™

Since its establishment in 2024, the ARISE Cancer Consortium™ has emerged as a leading network of top oncology institutions focused on accelerating discoveries and advancing care for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital serves as the headquarters, giving patients across the Carolinas early access to clinical trials and therapies for rare solid tumors — including brain tumors and sarcomas — while strengthening supportive and survivorship care.

Donors have been integral to ARISE's early growth, with the Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation, Isabella Santos Foundation, Hyundai Hope on Wheels, and Beverly and Mark Ladley (through the Baby J Ladley Pediatric Brain Tumor Fund) providing leading support. Their generosity is helping bring hope to families across the region as the consortium prepares to launch its first two clinical trials.

Advancing Pediatric Rehabilitation

Philanthropy is helping patients at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital take important steps toward recovery through innovative rehabilitation equipment and vital family support. Inspired by his own journey, Jacob Pritchett funded the ZeroG Gait and Balance System, a ceiling-mounted device that enables early, intensive therapy while reducing fall risks. With this innovative technology, patients of all ages will soon be able to safely practice walking, balance, and movement.

Supporting families alongside patients, the Charlotte Knights continue to provide critical resources for children transitioning from inpatient care to home. The team's latest gift will help cover essential needs — including in-home accessibility, medical equipment, housing, and transportation — ensuring families can focus on recovery.

Partnering with Children’s Miracle Network®

As a longtime member of Children's Miracle Network, Levine Children's Hospital benefits from community fundraising that enhances patient care. In 2025, Walmart and Sam's Club led local efforts, raising more than $550,000 to support pediatric charitable care, medical equipment, patient education, research, and treatment advancements. These funds were made possible through their summer register campaign, associate giving, and community grants, reflecting a strong commitment from both employees and the community.
